About the Janzen Lectureship

The Edmund Janzen Lectureship in Biblical Studies promotes careful scholarship in biblical interpretation as well as the witness of the Christian church. The lectures are intended for university faculty and students, pastors and lay leaders. Lectures occur in spring alternating annually between scholars of the Old and New Testaments. The lectureship is possible through an endowment established in 2005 to honor the 35 years Edmund Janzen served ��Ƶֱ�� as president and faculty member. These lectures reflect the value of biblical study for the mission of the church Edmund Janzen taught his students.

About Bible and Ministry Programs at ��Ƶֱ��

The Bible and ministry programs in ��Ƶֱ��'s School of Arts and Sciences prepares students for a life of mission in service to God and the needs of the world through majors and minors in Biblical and Theological Studies, in Christian Ministry and Leadership, as well as through general education courses required for all undergraduate students such as Jesus and the Christian Community, biblical literature and biblical perspective courses.

��Ƶֱ�� the Speaker

Brian Schultz is professor of Biblical and Theological Studies at ��Ƶֱ�� and Biblical Seminary. He was born in France to missionary parents, and after his B.A. in Biblical Studies he spent several years in pastoral ministry in Canada and France. He earned his Ph.D. at Bar Ilan University in Israel where he resided for over a decade, focusing on the historical, geographical, archaeological and cultural background of the Bible. He has dug at several archaeological sites in the Holy Land, most extensively at Gath, the hometown of Goliath and has led many study tours in Israel and Jordan for churches, colleges and seminaries. His research has focused on the status of biblical language education in the church and the academy, particularly on what is needed to make learning them both more accessible and more effective. Other recent publications include a new translation and commentary of the War Scroll—one of the Dead Sea Scrolls, and an article on the context and translation of the John 2:6 (the wedding at Cana). His passion is understanding better how Jesus and the apostles read and understood the Scriptures.
