From Sunbird to First Responder: AJ Kirby鈥檚 Story of Service

February 17, 2026

Fresno Pacific alumni show up in powerful ways, and AJ Kirby (MA 鈥22, BA 鈥20) is one of those stories that sticks with you.

On a recent episode of the Fresno Pacific Sunbird Sports Show, host Paul Meadors interviewed AJ (榴莲视频直播 men鈥檚 basketball, 2017鈥2022), now a firefighter in the Los Angeles area.

Paul summed it up perfectly: it was 鈥渁 really, really fun, informative鈥xcellent interview.鈥 AJ, he added, is 鈥渙ne shining example鈥 of the kind of leader Fresno Pacific helps develop.

Finding a Calling

AJ grew up with public service close to home. His father served as a 34-year LAPD veteran and retired sergeant, and AJ initially considered law enforcement. But after becoming an EMT and spending time around fire crews, firefighting became the clear fit.

鈥淛ust being around the fire department,鈥 AJ said, 鈥渟eeing the camaraderie鈥he teamwork鈥 enjoyed their schedule. I enjoyed the fact that every day is different. No day is the same.鈥

He added the heart behind the job: 鈥淭hey get to鈥erve the citizens and serve the community.鈥

鈥淏oot Camp鈥 Reality鈥攁nd Team Culture

When Paul asked about the start of AJ鈥檚 fire service journey, AJ described the fire academy as intense from day one.

鈥淭he first day of the academy was pretty intense,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 like a boot camp type of academy鈥hey鈥檙e trying to make sure you really want to do this.鈥

Even as a college athlete, the physical challenge was only part of it. The toughest lesson was mental and relational鈥攈ow to operate as a unit where everyone is responsible for everyone.

鈥淥ne person messes up, everyone gets disciplined for it,鈥 AJ explained. 鈥淵ou might not necessarily be the one messing up, but you get disciplined鈥ecause we鈥檙e all a team.鈥

A Day at the Station (and the Pressure of Dinner)

Firehouse life starts early.

鈥淚 make relief around 5:30,鈥 AJ said. 鈥淵ou check your SCBA鈥ou check your PPE鈥ake sure everything is ready to go.鈥

The Palisades Fire: 鈥淥nce in a Lifetime鈥

One of the most sobering moments of the conversation came when Paul asked about the Palisades fire, which affected so many communities across Southern California. AJ wasn鈥檛 assigned directly to the main incident, but he clearly remembers the urgency of that day.

鈥淲e turn on the news and we see the Palisades fire going out,鈥 he said. 鈥淚mmediately grab the radios鈥nd you could just hear the intensity鈥sking for additional companies.鈥

The conditions were extreme.

鈥淭hat day it was just intense,鈥 AJ said. 鈥淭he winds were insane鈥hat was one of the busiest days I ever seen.鈥

Veterans told him it was historic.

鈥淕uys with 30 years on the job say that鈥檚 a once in a lifetime type of thing,鈥 AJ shared. 鈥淵ou鈥檒l never see that again.鈥

Later, AJ drove by the area and shared the image that still sticks with him.

鈥淎ll you could see is the chimneys,鈥 he said. 鈥淓verything else burned down.鈥

After lineup, drills and station tasks, the day is shaped by calls鈥攐ften with little predictability. And yes, there鈥檚 one task that comes with its own kind of heat: cooking.

鈥淚f you don鈥檛 serve a good meal,鈥 AJ laughed, 鈥測ou鈥檙e going to hear about it.鈥

His go-to dinner?

鈥淐arne asada tacos.鈥

Fresno Pacific鈥檚 Lasting Impact

AJ鈥檚 榴莲视频直播 path began when a coach noticed him during a high school tournament.

鈥淗e was at the game watching,鈥 AJ said. 鈥淗e offered me a scholarship鈥nd that鈥檚 how I ended up going to 榴莲视频直播.鈥

The transition wasn鈥檛 easy at first.

鈥淚t was hard鈥 not knowing anyone鈥 four hours from home,鈥 AJ admitted, especially as a redshirt. 鈥淏eing a redshirt鈥racticing but don鈥檛 actually get to play鈥t was hard on me.鈥 But the relationships changed everything.

鈥淚鈥檝e created lifelong friendships and brothers,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 something you can鈥檛 replicate.鈥

AJ also credited Coach CJ Haydock for shaping the program鈥檚 culture. 鈥淗e just took us in, treated us like we were his own kids. He wanted us to grow as men off the court, and then that will tie into basketball,鈥 AJ said. 鈥淗e wanted us to grow as men off the court.鈥

I wouldn鈥檛 be the person who I am today without going to 榴莲视频直播.

A Sunbird Story Still Growing

By the end of the interview, Paul returned to the bigger picture, who AJ has become beyond the stat sheet.

AJ put it simply: 鈥淚 love 榴莲视频直播. I love Fresno鈥hey molded me who I am today. I wouldn鈥檛 be the person who I am today without going to 榴莲视频直播.鈥

Sunbirds are built for more than the game. They鈥檙e built to lead, to serve and to show up when it matters most.

Go Sunbirds.
